Kenneth James Crist

Kenneth James Crist retired from the Wichita, Kansas Police Department in 1992, after 20 years’ service, the second half as a motorcycle patrolman. During his time on “the wheel”, he was also a certified instructor for Motorcycle Safety Foundation, teaching others the basics of motorcycling and not getting killed in traffic.

He began writing in 1994 and has over 200 short stories to his credit in venues ranging from Skin and Bones to Kudzu Monthly, mostly internet publications.

Having retired a second time from the security force at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, he now drives for American Red Cross blood services as a volunteer and is also active with the American Legion Riders and the Patriot Guard.

He lives with his wife Donna in Wichita, along with two spoiled dogs and a haunted Kawasaki, “Christine.”

Groaning+for+Burial+

Groaning for Burial

Kenneth James Crist's haunting tales describe a new gut wrenching America, adapted to the presence and tastes of the undead, where love, death and motorcycles still matter but make us ask a familiar question: Are the good times really over for good? His voices you recognize, the prose natural, as if a family member is telling you the story; and in that, makes what is being described all that more disturbing.

Available in paperback and ebook.

Reviews

“With an imagination like Studs Terkel on acid, author Kenneth James Crist regales his readers with an unblinking, jaundiced eye of what a zombie apocalypse would really be like. This collection, Groaning for Burial: The Carrion Men Chronicles, is definitely—and defiantly—a feisty swarm of zombie tales for grown-ups.” *** Hillary Lyon: Editor for Subsynchronous Press ***

“Being unschooled in zombie lingo, I dug into this, thinking in terms of a week or so to finish. Instead, it’s such an intriguing page turner, I couldn’t put it down. Kenneth James Crist has put together an excellent and eclectic collection of zombie tales.  This little volume offers a marvelous cross section of the spectrum of zombies, their habits, their causes, and solutions available to the rest of humanity while tossing in a little sex, ample booze, plenty of violence and gore, and a full load of good reading.” *** Gary Clifton, Texas: Forty years a cop, writer ***

“Wickedly addictive and tremendously horrifying, Kenneth James Crist has shown me sides of zombies that I never knew I wanted to see. I ran through this book, finishing these wonderfully written stories in only twenty-four hours. This is a must read for any monster fan; showing in marvelous detail just what it would be like if the dead started to rise out of their graves.” *** Michael D. Davis, Author of the Count Whorton detective series ***

Kenneth James Crist’s Groaning for Burial is a great collection of zombie stories with a variety of mostly scruffy characters doing their best to survive in the new times. Kenneth gives his characters color, most often with a splash of blood-red, by using some snappy dialogue and infusing gut-wrenching sadness with the loss of camaraderie. Each story carries a common theme, us against them, but each story has its own plot and outcome. This is definitely a great read. ***Roy Dorman, crime and horror writer.***
